"This is the latest in a long line from the AARP that is full of LIES. Absolutely NOBODY is Congress is proposing to take away anyone's SS or Medicare benefits.
I am telling everyone I know to contract their representatives (my district happens to be waiting for a special election) to call you to stop your lies and to tell their representatives to do what they can to rein in the enormous unfunded liabilities that these two programs represent. There will be not enough taxpayers to fund these programs very long, and then NOBODY will get any benefits. Every penny we have paid into it over our lifetimes has been paid out immediately as benefits to the previous generations of elderly. SS and Medicare are not trust funds, their are ordinary social WELFARE programs.
Accordingly, here are some ideas that I want you to support, assuming you truly care about the welfare of your members (an assumption that is highly questionable, in light of the far left policy positions AARP has been promoting):
1. Immediately MEANS-TEST all Social Security and Medicare benefits.
2. Remove the salary cap on income on which Social Security and Medicare taxes are withheld.
3. Begin converting Social Security from a welfare program to an annuity program. Give personal ownership of the "lock box" to the people who actually pay into it. Allow the owner to make investment decisions, to achieve higher returns on their investment. Gradually increase the portion that the owner is allowed to invest himself. Gradually change the formula for the monthly benefit payouts from the current one, based on past income, to the actuarily sound one, based on accumulated balance.
There is no amount that the government can confiscate from the people that would ever cover the unfunded liabilities represented by these welfare programs as presently constituted, not if they taxed away everything we have and did not leave us enough to starve on. Countries have gone down this path, and failed -- the USSR and communist eastern Europe, for example; and others are failing now -- Britain, southern Europe, sometimes called the PIIGS. America must not follow them to the same fate. These programs MUST be revised, along sound free market economic principles. Otherwise NOBODY will receive any benefits, not the baby boomers coming on-line beginning this year, not the millennials who are entering the work force (hah, if Obama's policies left them any jobs to have). Even with massive illegal immigration there will not be enough of them to pay for us or the generations coming up after us. The system MUST be reformed NOW.
