Is Sharia Law Derived from the Old Testament?

There has been much discussion about Sharia law, which the average American assumes comes directly out of the Quran.  The news is replete with stories of women being stoned to death for adultery and other so-called “crimes,” honor killings, and horrible punishments of individuals for minor crimes.

 

Apparently, the Quran is often misunderstood, even by rank and file Muslims.  According to the Skepic’s Society there is no mention of execution by stoning in the Quran.  (The Skeptic’s Society is far from an apologist organization; they take a critical look at all of the holy books, including the Bible and the Book of Mormon.)  What is not understood by many is the fact that much of Sharia law is derived from the Hadith, which was written by Muslim scholars.  The Hadith was the scholars’ interpretation of what they thought Mohammed wished for his followers.

 

So, how did all of those horrible punishments wind up in Sharia Law.  Many suggest it was lifted from the Old Testament of the Bible, which contains the “law books” as written by Moses.  Below, is a list of verses taken from the Old Testament.   Does any of this sound familiar?

 

 

FOR TOUCHING MT SINAI

 

Whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death. Exodus 19:13

 

FOR TAKING ACCURSED THINGS

 

Achan ... took of the accursed thing. ... And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. ... So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Joshua 7:1-26

 

CURSING AND BLASPHING

 

And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him. Leviticus 24:16

 

ADULTRY

 

If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city. Deuteronomy 22:23-24

 

ANIMALS

 

If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned. Exodus 21:28

WORSHIPING OTHER GODS

 

If there be found among you ... that ... hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them ... Then shalt thou ... tone them with stones, till they die. Deuteronomy 17:2-5

 

If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers ... thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die. Deuteronomy 13:5-10

 

DISOBEYING PARENTS  (Honor Killings)

 

If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother ... Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city ... And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die. Deuteronomy 21:18-21

 

WITCHES AND WIZARDS

 

A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them. Leviticus 20:27

CURSING THE KING

 

Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. 1 Kings 21:10

 

One cannot help but see the irony in the similarity between the laws laid out in the Old Testament versus what is practiced by those adhering to Sharia Law.  Can the Jewish law of old be that different from what is practiced in Sharia Law?

The stories of savagery and brutality in the Old Testament are often used by nonbelievers to discredit Christianity and Judaism. They are wrong in one major way...Christianity is based primarily on the New Testament and stresses the compassion and love of a merciful God. If anything, Judaism is based on the OT far more than Christianity. Thru indepth study you will find that many OT stories are similar to other religious beliefs dating back hundreds if not thousands of years before Christ. Many of these are stories of inhumane events. For example there are stories of a "great flood" in other Asian cultures written long before the story of Noah. It's not surprising that Islam also contains accounts, or variations of these accounts in the Qu'ran. However, it should also be remembered that the early writings of Islam were more peaceful than later writings. The killing of infidels and other acts of butchery were later additions.

Other similarities between the Bible and the Koran include the belief that Christ (Revelations) and the 12th Imam (Qu'ran)will return to Earth and rule over all mankind for 7 years. With some differences, these predictions are extremely alike.

Incidently, there's no way you can compare the NT laws with Sharia Law. Any similarities occur only in the OT.

Israel doesn't base it's current LAW upon the OT. No modern society of any persuasion bases their LAW upon the practices or traditions of ancestors thousands of years ago - except Islam.

Muslims are a throwback to ancient times when the Roman church ruled half the world and maintained their own armies and constabulary; when nonbelievers and heretics were burned at the stake by church officials and their families outcast from society. It wasn't that long ago that Henry VIII executed wife after wife because the church denied him an annulment, then ultimately created his own Church of England to get his way and purged Catholics by burning, beheading or imprisonment.

The point is, England today has great civil laws, the basis of our own law, in SPITE of the history of it. The Muslims alone are still living in the brutal and barbaric past.

Judaism is based on the Torah, which duplicates the OT in many ways. Most Christians that I know look to it for important historical references and predictions about the future, but the real foundation is the teachings of Christ Jesus who said, "I didn't come to destroy the (Jewish) Law, but to fulfill it." Since Islam came along 600 years after Christ it's only reasonable to assume that they copied many aspects of the most popular religion of the time.

Jesus actually agreed with the Old Testament, and lived by its laws. He never put it down as primitive or "junk". If we were born before Jesus came, we would have to have been jewish, by birth or conversion - in order to be in the covenant.

We don't agree with the Old Testament today, it looks crazy and a lot like Islam - but we Christians insist it was God's Holy Word. We can't love Old Testament Daniel - but somehow call "Leviticus" junk. It all goes together - for the Christian.
